4A Boys Golf Regionals: Champions, State Qualifiers Secured

AURORA - The four 4A boys golf regional championships were determined Wednesday and Thursday with Erie (Region 1), Cheyenne Mountain (Region 2), Riverdale Ridge (Region 3) and Grand Junction (Region 4) claiming regional championships and an automatic berth into the upcoming state championship.  

In addition to the regional champions, the regional runner-ups also secured their spot in the state championship with Ponderosa, Lutheran and Windsor finishing second in Region 1, Region 2 and Region 3, respectively, while Mullen defeated Denver South in a tiebreaker to secure the second Region 4 spot.

The 4A Boys Golf State Championship will be held on Oct. 2-3 at The Bridges Golf & Country Club in Montrose.
    

Region 1

PUEBLO (Sept. 20) - Erie sophomore Sean Cary won a three-hole playoff against Ponderosa senior Bryar Moss Wednesday at Walking Stick Golf Course to capture the 4A Boys Golf Region 1 individual title, and Erie came away with the regional team title with a team score of 10-over 223. Ponderosa, which finished second, at 17-over 230, will join Erie as an automatic team qualifier to the upcoming state championships.
 
Pueblo West took third in the team race, carding a 25-over 238, and was followed by The Classical Academy (249, +36) in fourth and Falcon (259, +46) in fifth.
 
Individually, Cary and Moss each carded a 2-under 70, and checking in third was Erie senior Hayden Jackson with a 72. Coronado senior Parker Shirola and Pueblo West Preston Allen tied for fourth at 75, and one stroke back of that was The Classical Academy senior Nathan Valentine in sixth place.
 
With a 78, Ponderosa junior Cody Cotterman and Pueblo West sophomore Parker Shaw tied for seventh, while Pueblo East junior Jayden Padilla and Pueblo County senior Niko Cozzetto tied for ninth at 79.

Region 2

COLORADO SPRINGS (Sept. 20) - Cheyenne Mountain junior Charlie Doyle claimed medalist honors and the Redtail Hawks won the 4A Boys Region 2 Championship at the Country Club of Colorado Wednesday to clinch their spot in the upcoming state championship.
 
Lutheran sophomore Nicholas Brooks also finished the day at under par to help the Lions secure the second automatic team spot in the state tournament. As a team, Cheyenne Mountain turned in a 219 and Lutheran finished second at 221, followed by Evergreen in third at 224, Air Academy in fourth at 235 and Green Mountain in fifth at 245.
 
Doyle found himself atop the individual leaderboard with a 3-under 68, while Brooks was second at 1-under 70. Lutheran freshman Crew Fitzgerald tied for third with Evergreen juniors Lincoln Mackay and Tyler Long, with the trio finishing at 3-over 74. Cheyenne Mountain freshman Brayden DeStefano was sixth at 75, followed by Evergreen junior Liam Houlihan, Cheyenne Mountain junior Ethan Ivany and Littleton senior Jack Finish all tied for seventh at 76.
 
One stroke back of that was Evergreen junior Luke Sabina, Lutheran senior Joey Garofalo and Air Academy junior Cody Shatzer. The trio finished tied for 10th at 77.

Region 3

GREELEY (Sept. 21) – Riverdale Ridge senior Bradley Weinmaster set a new course record for a junior golfer from the blue tees by shooting a 9-under 63 at Boomerang Links Golf Course in Greeley. Weinmaster also earned medalist honors and led Riverdale Ridge to the 4A Boys Region 3 Regional Championship, with the team shooting 1-under 216 for the day.
 
Along with Riverdale, Windsor will be advancing to the 4A Boys Golf State Championship, after shooting 10-over 226, and placing second. Windsor was led by runner-up Kellen Ball, who shot 3-under 69, powered by six birdies and an eagle.
 
The top five teams were closed out with Niwot, which finished third, shooting 14-over 230. Loveland, which finished fourth, narrowly missing Niwot by shooting 15-over 231, and Centaurus and Broomfield, which tied for fifth, both shooting 18-over 234.
 
Mead’s Booth Hayes, placed third by shooting 1-under 71, with four birdies, and Broomfield’s Mason Hill, placed fourth by shooting an even 72, with three birdies.
 
Narrowly trailing those two were fifth-place finisher Will Sallee, from Loveland, who shot 1-over 73 and sixth-place finisher Emmett Shell, from Niwot, who shot 2-over 74. Riverdale Ridge's other top-10 individual finisher was Aiden Sweeney, who placed seventh after shooting 5-over 75. To round out the top-10 finishers, Longmont’s Jayson Mitts, Centaurus’ Matthew Vaver, and Eaglecrest’s Preston Waller all tied for eighth by shooting 4-over 76.

Region 4

GRAND JUNCTION (Sept. 20) - With a winning score of 232, Grand Junction won the 4A Boys Region 4 Regional Championship at Bookcliff Country Club, while Mullen defeated Denver South in a playoff to claim the second automatic spot in the upcoming state championship.
 
Mullen and Denver South tied for second, at 238, while Durango finished fourth, at 239, and Montrose and Steamboat Springs tied for fifth with round scores of 240.
 
Individually, Steamboat Springs senior Michael Dinapoli claimed medalist honors by one stroke, as he signed for a 2-over 73 and Durango senior Zachary Griswold turned in a 3-over 74. Palisade senior Ian Allen and Mullen senior Ryan Brady finished tied for third at 75, followed by Denver South sophomore Cole Kratz in fifth, at 76.
 
Grand Junction junior Ky Korte, senior teammate Maddox Lovato and Montrose senior Noah Richmond found themselves in a three-way tie for sixth, at 77, while Grand Junction junior Jack Kaul, Mullen senior Jack Newton and Battle Mountain senior Owen Jackson tied for ninth at 78.
