AURORA - Eaton High School shortstop Walker Martin was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the second round of the 2023 Major League Baseball Draft Sunday night. The 52nd pick overall, Martin becomes the 10th-highest pick straight out of a Colorado high school in state history, and the highest since the Baltimore Orioles took Cherry Creek outfielder Darnell McDonald at No. 26 in 1997.

Overall, he’s the 347th player to be drafted straight out of high school in Colorado. He also becomes the 16th player from Eaton to be selected in the
MLB Draft, and the eighth to be selected straight out of Eaton High School.
Martin entered the draft ranking 30th overall by
MLB Pipeline. He won three-straight state titles at Eaton, with the Reds going 29-0 this year. He also led the country in home runs (20) this past season, while batting .633 with 75 RBI, 64 runs, 11 doubles and four triples. He was named Colorado’s player of the year by
CHSAA,
Gatorade and
MaxPreps.
