Lloyd GaskillCertainly one of Colorado's greatest high school coaches in terms of motivation and caring, not to mention an outstanding coaching record, Lloyd Gaskill saw his football teams earn a berth in the state playoffs in 20 of his 29 years as coach. Ten of those teams were state champions and eight enjoyed undefeated seasons. His teams played for the state title on 14 occasions.
"To me, it's a real outstanding honor. The organization has always been really dear to me, always had a real influence on my life. I hope that I have had an influence on it. It has always served the needs of the students and while I was president I felt it was a privilege to work with a real strong staff, the former coach said. "This just means an awful lot to me."
His overall coaching record in football is 236-52-8, including a string of 42 straight wins. He also coached basketball and track and field. Mr. Gaskill was a coach for 27 years at Limon and two years at Calhan.
The long-time coach's contributions to high school activities did not end at the local level, or with state championship success. Mr. Gaskill was CHSAA President from 1974-75 and a member of its Executive Committee from 197077. He served as a member of the football committee for 15 years and was on the Board of Control for another 14. He is one of only a handful of active coaches to be elected to the Executive Committee and as President of CHSAA, serving as a coordinating voice to blend the coaches perspective with those of the administrator in building stronger CHSAA programs for students. He was a member of 11 educational organizations and served as president of nine organizations during his career. He has 24 honors listed on his nomination form, including several coach of the year and distinguished service awards. He is a member of the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame (1981), Colorado High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame (1977) and National High School Coaches Hall of Fame (1976).
