Bill HinkleyNo person has more CHSAA history in his life than Bill Hinkley. As President of the CHSAA in 1954-55 and superintendent of the Aurora Public Schools, Hinkley spearheaded the drive which resulted in the construction of the first headquarters owned by the schools and the Association.
In fact, Hinkley provided much of the finish work in the CHSAA's Montview Boulevard headquarters himself, laying the floors and installing the ceilings, building and installing the podium and platform in the large meeting room. He developed the Bronze Brick Program by which schools contributed to the building funds for two CHSAA office headquarters, made the patterns for the bricks and installed over 200 bricks himself. He did all the work installing partition walls, hanging doors, floors and ceilings in the small four room addition on the southwest portion of the building. Hinkley served two terms on the CHSAA Executive Committee, was a Board of Control member, served on the Property Administration Committee and was chairman of the Track Committee for over 20 years.
He served as the CHSAA state track meet referee for 30 years and officiated football and basketball for 15 years.
After completing his undergraduate work at Colorado College, Hinkley served two years as member of the Colorado House of Representatives (1930-31).
He was the first president of the Colorado Association of School Executives and served 25 years, 12 as chairman, of the CEA Legislative Committee. He authored the first Colorado school finance bill.
Hinkley may be the only person in the country who is a member of his state aeronautic hall of fame (Frank G. Brewer Aerospace Award) and the state sports hall of fame (Colorado Sports Hall of Fame, 1986).
He was an outstanding high school athlete for the then Manual High School Bricklayers, earning 16 letters in football, baseball, basketball and track.
