Sport modifications for COVID-19

The following is a general overview of modifications which are being made to structure of a sport season in order to ensure the sports can comply with current national, state and local health guidelines.

Note that every sport has requirements to mitigate spread and transmission of COVID-19. These requirements can be found in specific sports bulletins, and on the COVID-19 page.

Season A

Cross Country

Bulletin

  • Reduce the maximum number of regular season meets from 11 to 7.
  • No alternate runners. 2A: run 6, score 4; 3A-5A run 7, score 5.
  • No JV or open races at varsity meets. Schools can host a JV meet or open race separate from varsity.
  • 50 athletes per gender will be allowed at regular season meets. Must start in waves of no more than 25.
  • Postseason rosters: 2A run 5, score 4; 3A-5A run 6, score 5.
  • Regionals: 75 athletes per gender will be allowed.
  • State championship: 100 athletes per gender, per classification will be allowed.

Boys Golf

Bulletin

  • No changes to the structure of the season.

Softball

Bulletin

  • 16-game regular season
  • Rosters: 12 players per level
  • 16 team brackets, league champions automatically qualify, and remaining qualifiers through CHSAA Seeding Index (RPI, Coaches Poll, MaxPreps)
  • Seeded via the CHSAA Seeding Index (RPI, Coaches Poll, MaxPreps).

Boys Tennis

Bulletin

  • Reduce the maximum number of regular season matches from 12 matches/0 tournament or 11 matches/1 tournament or 10 matches/2 tournaments or 9 matches/3 tournament to 9 matches/0 tournament or 8 matches/1 tournament or 7 matches/2 tournament or 6 matches/3 tournament (25% decrease).
  • Minimum matches for individuals/teams to advance is four at the position they are seeking to play at for Regionals. A waiver for COVID-19 reasons must be obtained from the CHSAA office.
  • Modify the season length from 10 weeks (through state) to 7 weeks (through state).
  • Regionals will be a single elimination tournament – winner and runner-up will advance to state.
  • State will be a single elimination tournament played over two days. No 3rd/4th place

Season B

Basketball

Bulletin

  • All Classes: 14-game regular season.
  • All Classes: 12-game sub-varsity
  • Postseason 1A-3A: 24-team brackets.
  • Postseason 4A, 5A: 32-team brackets.
  • Masks must be worn during play.
  • Players are limited to 76 total quarters in the season, exclusive of overtime and post-season games.
  • State Tournament: No consolations in 2021.
  • Minimum 7 games played (pending COVID waivers) to qualify for playoffs.
  • League champions automatically qualify for the postseason.
  • CHSAA Seeding Index will determine at-large qualifiers in each class. These data points will be combined at the end of the season to create an overall ranking. To do this, data from each ranking will be added together, and then divided by four.

Ice Hockey

Bulletin

  • 13 game maximum regular season (No individual or team game minimum)
  • Schools must play 12 of their 13 regular season games against league opponents
  • Only one game against a league opponent will count towards the final league standings (there will be instances in some leagues where certain teams will play one another three times)
  • Non-League game must be within geographic region and receive written approval from the CHSAA Assistant Commissioner overseeing Ice Hockey (list of each geographic region will be sent to schools)
  • January 18 start of formal practice – January 25 start of competition (No Scrimmages or Foundation Games)
  • March 11 end of regular season – Frozen Four TBD location and time - dates subject to change
  • 4 team playoff bracket for both 4A and 5A
  • State playoff bracket will not be seeded, and matchups will be determined by the Asst. Commissioner overseeing Ice Hockey (1st Rd league matchups are a possibility)
  • Each league will receive one Automatic Qualifier into the postseason
  • Each league will have sole responsibility for determining the Auto Qualifier for their league
  • New Seeding Formula (MaxPreps, Coaches Poll, RPI) will determine the single At-Large qualifier (Bracket released Friday, March 12)

Skiing

Bulletin

  • Changes to the state championship qualification system.

Spirit

  • Teams can support their schools without doing anything participatory until the regular season begins on Jan. 18.
  • Masks will be worn at all times, except for 2:30 (or 3:00 for Gameday) of performance time at the state competition.
  • Teams are encouraged to work in pods or stunt groups to eliminate as much crossover as possible.
  • Continue to maintain social distancing during sideline cheer.
  • State competition: The competitive performance structure will not change. Things such as warmups, pictures, etc., may be changed due to venue.
  • The number of teams permitted to enter the state competition will not change.

Girls Swimming & Diving

Bulletin

  • 7 meet maximum regular season plus League (No individual or team minimum meet requirement)
  • Schools may only compete against teams within their own league during the regular season.  
    • All Meets must adhere to the local limitations around number of participants allowed indoors
  • January 18 start of formal practice – January 25 start of competition (NO Scrimmages or Foundation Meets)
  • March 6 end of regular season – March 11-13 State Meet (TBD location and dates subject to change)
  • 20 qualifiers per event in each classification for the CHSAA State Meet (Timed Finals)
  • State Qualifiers will be based on time from the regular season (Top 20 in each event plus ties)
    • Max four entries per school per event
  • Athletes will arrive at established time prior to their event and the pool will be cleared at the conclusion of each event at State due to participant limits indoors

Wrestling

  • Regular season: 20 dual maximum. Tris and quads are allowed with a maximum of four teams in attendance.
  • Weight certification opens Nov. 1, must be complete prior to competition.
  • Regionals: Two-day format, 16-man bracket. The first seven weight classes will compete on the first day. The next seven weight classes will compete on the second day. Wrestlebacks will only happen from third round on.
  • The first and second placers will qualify for the state tournament.
  • State tournament: Eight-person bracket, full consolation. One-day format.
  • Team scores at both regionals and state will score placers 1-4.

Season C

Field Hockey

  • Schools will be divided into three groups of five by the Assistant Commissioner overseeing Field Hockey
    • Group A: Arapahoe, Cheyenne Mountain, Colorado Academy, Liberty, Palmer Ridge
    • Group B: Dakota Ridge, Fossil Ridge, Mountain Vista, Regis Jesuit, St. Mary’s Academy
    • Group C: Cherry Creek, Denver East, Grandview, Kent Denver, Smoky Hill
  • 10 game maximum regular season (No game minimum - home and away match vs. each group opponent and one home and away with pre-determined non-group opponent)
    • Non-group matchups:
      • Denver East vs Fossil Ridge
      • Colorado Academy vs Kent Denver
      • Cherry Creek vs Regis Jesuit
      • Mountain Vista vs Palmer Ridge
      • Arapahoe vs St. Mary’s Academy
      • Dakota Ridge vs Liberty
      • Cheyenne Mountain vs Grandview
      • Smoky Hill vs TBD JV Team
  • 4 team playoff bracket

Football

  • Seven-game season for each classification.
  • Eight-team postseason all classifications.
  • CHSAA Seeding Index (MaxPreps, Coaches Poll, RPI, Packard Rankings) will determine all qualifiers in all classifications.
  • 5A, 4A will play regularly scheduled week 4-10 games.
  • 3A will play regularly scheduled week 5-11 games.
  • 2A, 1A, and 8-man will play regularly scheduled week 4-10 games.
  • 6-man will play regularly scheduled week 3-9 games.

Gymnastics

  • Eight-meet regular season.
  • State meet: 12 team rotations each classification. Teams and individuals determined by score

Boys Soccer

  • 10 game maximum regular season (No game minimum)
  • Non-league games are highly discouraged especially outside of your geographic region; need written approval from CHSAA Assistant Commissioner overseeing Boys Soccer for non-league games
  • 16 team playoff bracket 3A-5A / 8 team playoff bracket 2A
  • State playoff bracket will not be seeded, and matchups will be determined by the Assistant Commissioner overseeing Boys Soccer based on geographic location of leagues (1st Rd league matchups are a possibility)
  • Leagues will receive their already established Auto Qualifiers based on league size and will have sole responsibility for determining the Auto Qualifiers for their league
  • New Seeding Formula (MaxPreps, Coaches Poll, RPI) will determine the At-Large qualifiers for each classification

Unified Bowling

  • Changes will be determined as the season approaches.

Girls Volleyball

  • 14 game maximum regular season. (14 for lower-level teams.) Minimum number of matches for postseason is 8, unless a waiver for COVID-19 reasons is obtained from the CHSAA Volleyball Committee.
  • Modify the season length from 14 weeks (through state) to 7 weeks (through state).
  • Roster limit for regular season and postseason: 12 players per level
  • Regionals will be reduced to 24 teams. League champions will still be guaranteed entrance and the remaining teams will be taken from the CHSAA Seeding Index.
  • Seeding will be done via the CHSAA Seeding Index.
  • Only 8 teams to state. No wild card teams.
  • State will be a single elimination tournament played over two days.

Season D

Baseball

    • Changes will be announced as the season approaches.

Girls Golf

  • No changes to the structure of the season.

Boys Lacrosse

  • 10 game maximum regular season (No game minimum) 
  • 8 team playoff bracket 4A and 5A
  • State playoff bracket will not be seeded, and matchups will be determined by the Assistant Commissioner overseeing Boys Lacrosse based on geographic location of leagues (1st Rd league matchups are a possibility)
  • Each league will receive one Automatic Qualifier into the postseason
    • The 5A school with the highest ranking in the new seeding formula among 5A League #1, Boulder, Prairie View, Fruita Monument and Grand Junction will qualify automatically into the postseason
  • Each league will have sole responsibility for determining the Auto Qualifier for their league
  • New Seeding Formula (MaxPreps, Coaches Poll, RPI) will determine the At-Large qualifiers for each classification

Girls Lacrosse

  • Eight-team postseason in each classification.
  • 10-game maximum regular season.
  • CHSAA Seeding Index utilized to determine qualifiers, and seed brackets.

Boys Swimming & Diving
