Boys Tennis: Dual Team Tennis State Champions Crowned

DENVER - The Colorado High School Activities Association hosted its third-ever dual-style team tennis state championship Tuesday at the Denver Tennis Park. The tournament is played to clinch, so as soon as one team wins at four positions, the match is called.

The play-to-clinch format didn't matter in the 5A match, as the decision came down to the seventh line to finish; No. 3 doubles. Cherry Creek got on the board first with a win at No. 1 singles, but wins at No. 2 doubles, No 1 doubles and No. 2 singles, respectively, put Regis Jesuit ahead 3-1. The Bruins won at No. 4 doubles and No. 3 singles to tie the match. With a No. 3 doubles victory, Cherry Creek secured its 47th state title in boys tennis, more than doubling the second-most wins (Cheyenne Mountain, 19). It also marks the fifth-straight year the Bruins have won the state championship.

In 4A, Kent Denver won the No. 1 singles match before Colorado Academy claimed the No. 3 singles and No. 4 doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead. Kent Denver would go on to claim the next three points with wins at No. 1 doubles, No. 3 doubles and No. 2 doubles, respectively, to clinch the 4-2 victory. The win marks the 14th state title - and third-straight - for boys tennis at Kent Denver.
