CHSAA hall of famer Leslie Moore passes away on Sunday

Moore was the first female Board of Directors president in CHSAA history

Colorado High School Activities Association hall of famer Leslie Moore passed away on Sunday.

Moore, who served as a teacher, coach and administrator at Denver Public Schools for over 35 years, was the first female Board of Directors president in CHSAA history (1996-98).

“Leslie Moore opened the door and cracked the ceiling for my generation of female, athletic administrators to have opportunities in this male dominated space,” CHSAA commissioner Rhonda Blanford-Green. “She planted seeds, mentored and empowered many of us to create and check our own boxes, shake the norms and to be purposeful advocates at the table for those that would be voiceless. We have lost a pioneer.”

During her time at DPS, Moore was the district athletic director and hosted hundreds of playoff sites. A graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School, she joined the DPS district athletic office in 1990 and served as district athletic director from 1998-2008.

Moore was also the Title IX officer at DPS, overseeing 78 elementary schools, 19 middle schools, 10 high schools and 40 departments. She established budgeting to ensure that female athletes received equitable funding and had the same access to facilities and full schedules. Moore was the first assignor to utilize female officials on boys basketball games and was a leading proponent of the three-person officiating crews in the sport.
