A 1950 graduate of Manual High School, Alex Burl picked up his nickname "Bullet" in high school because he ran so fast. He won the 1949 state 100-yard dash championship with a 10.0 time, one of the fastest times in the country. Burl also excelled football, earning a scholarship to Colorado State University. He was a standout track and football performer for the Rams. Following college, he entered the military, running track and playing football. In 1956, Burl posted a 9.3 100-yard dash. He also played for the Chicago Cardinals football team. He was a teacher in Denver Public Schools and coached at West and Manual High Schools in track, cross country and football
