Bart Stevens
Flagler
Bart Stevens was a standout three-sport athlete for Flagler High School from 1973-1977, lettering four times in football, basketball and track & field.
His football career was one of the more remarkable in Colorado annals. He was a four-year starter and complied a 52-5 overall record. He ran for 1,956 total yards, while passing for 4,599 more. He scored 25 career rushing touchdowns and threw for 67 through the air.
He was a two-year starter on the basketball team and finished second at the state track meet in the discuss (1977) and as part of the 800-meter relay.
His leadership as quarterback was apparent from the start. Although Flagler lost its first three games with him at the helm, it went on the state title game before falling. As a sophomore, his team went 12-0 before falling in the semifinals.
Flagler won the state title in his last two seasons, defeating Granada 26-20 (1975) and Peetz 40-14 (1976).
Steven’s high school coach said that after 30 years of coaching, he realized just how special Stevens was an athlete and leader.
Stevens moved on to the University of Southern Colorado where he was the starting quarterback. After college, he was interested in furthering his football career in the CFL, but a shoulder injury forced him to choose a different path. Role models from his past led him to make the decision to become a coach and teacher.
He was a highly successful coach at Burlington High School for six years before moving on to Farmington, NM, High School where he coached and taught for five years.
Upon his return, to Colorado, he accepted a job as assistant principal/athletic director at Douglas County High School and served there for seven years, before taking a similar position at Rock Canyon High School for the last six years of his career.
