When the Houston Astros drafted Scott Elarton in the first round of the 1994 draft, no one was surprised. Least of all, those who watched the prep phenom dominate the athletic landscape from 1991-1994 for Lamar High School.

Elarton created a stir when he split time as a freshman quarterback, then was the school’s starting basketball center and finally, dominating everyone from the mound in baseball.

Over his four-year career with Lamar, Elarton’s teams won three state baseball championships, finished second in basketball twice and made the football playoffs three times. An outstanding student, he was his class valedictorian, won the 1994 Fred Steinmark Award and signed a combined athletic/academic letter of intent to attend Sanford University.

In basketball, Elarton was named 4A State Tournament MVP and Player of the Year twice and All-State three times. On the gridiron, he led all 4A quarterbacks with 1900 passing yards as a sophomore.

But, it was on the baseball diamond where Elarton excelled. The 6-7 standout was 9-0 as a freshman with a 1.96 ERA and hit .541, as his team won a state title. For his career, he was 37-2, with a 1.59 ERA in 220 innings pitched. He struck out 399 batters. He was All-Colorado three times, all-state four years and earned prep All-America honors his last two seasons.

After his junior season, Elarton played for the USA Baseball Junior National Team in the Junior World Championships, the finishing second and players earning silver medals.

He spent 19 years playing professional baseball, including 10 in the Major Leagues. His best year was 2000 when he posted 17 wins for the Astros.

Elarton joins his father, L. D., who was a member of the 2017 CHSAA Hall of Fame class
