One of the state’s finest athletes, Jeff Campbell could electrify those in attendance with his football kick returns or his track sprints.

He was a two-time state champion in 1985 and 1986 in the 100 and 200 meters, along with being the Class 2A Co-Player of the Year in football in 1985.

Those who know him said he had his choice of professional sports in hockey, skiing and football. He chose football.

Campbell lettered in football and track all four years in high school and once in basketball.

Campbell was also a two-time letter winner in music, many times missing the halftime break with his teammates while marching with the band, resplendent in his football uniform.

He went on to have a spectacular career at the University of Colorado and then played in the National Football League for five years with the Lions and Broncos.

He, too, was an amazing ice hockey player and was one of 75 invited to try out for the 1985 US Junior National Ice Hockey team, but did not make the final roster. He did participate in the National Elite hockey camps at the Olympic Training Center in 1983 and 1985.

The state’s 2A leading rusher in 1985, Campbell ran for 305 yards and scored five times against Meeker.

He electrified the state when, as a CU Buff, struck for a 60-yard punt return against Nebraska, leading CU to its first win over the Cornhuskers in 26 years.

While with the Broncos, Campbell hosted his own annual charity event that benefitted Children’s Hospital.

He was a noted leader at BMHS and his relationship as a leader, competitor and teammate resonate from those who know him. He and his family recently returned to Colorado and he is regional sales director for St. Jude Medical and its work with deep brain stimulation.
