Art Wollenweber
Sheridan

One of Colorado’ iconic coaches and administrators, Art Wollenweber remains a stalwart figure in the history of the Metropolitan League.

In gaining this lofty status, Wollenweber’s journey began at Denver East High School where, as a student athlete, he played football, basketball and baseball.

Following high school, Wollenweber spent some time in the military and then went to the University of Northern Colorado where he was a standout baseball player.

Coaching and teaching was in his blood and he became one of the state’s top baseball coaches at Sheridan High School, leading his teams to more than 300 wins over his 22 years as coach.

Those teams won seven league championships and made the state tournaments on eight occasions.

The Rams lost 11-2 to Las Animas in the 1972 AA state title game, made it to the semifinals twice and the quarterfinals five times.

In 1979, Wollenweber was the Colorado baseball coach of the year and the NFHS regional coach of the year, along with being nominated as the National Coach of the Year. He was also the state coach of the year in 1987.

Following his coaching career, it was only natural that he move into administration.

As the Sheridan athletic director, Wollenweber was leaned on by the Metropolitan League and served 16 years as the group’s Secretary/Treasurer. During that time, he was also a member of the CHSAA Board of Control (now called Legislative Council) and the Association’s Executive Committee (now call the Board of Directors.

Wollenweber was named the Colorado Athletic Directors Association’s Athletic Director of the Year in 1988.

And, in 1989, he was inducted into the Colorado High School Coaches Association’s Hall of Fame.
