One of the finest all-around “old-timers” in Colorado prep history both as a coach and as an athlete, Browning was a 1939 Trinidad High School graduate who played football, basketball and track for the Miners and earned all-state honors in football. As an assistant to CHSAA Hall of Fame member Pat Panek, the Angels football teams won nine city championships and one state title. Browning was head wrestling and track coach for 10 years, leading the Angels to four state track championships. He moved on to George Washington High School in 1960, where his football teams won seven city titles and were state runners-up six times. He also coached swimming, golf and tennis during his career and had similar success.
