One of the legendary Denver high school coaches, Dick Yates coached football and baseball at Denver South and Kennedy high schools from 1960 until 1977, when he retired from teaching. He was an assistant basketball coach at the two schools from 1954 until 1969. In 22 years as a head coach and 53 years as an assistant coach, his teams enjoyed 22 city or league titles, six state championships, three state runners-up and one third place finish. In all, he coached the 1958, 1959 and 1960 state baseball champions from South and was on Kennedy’s 1974 football championship staff and the Kent Denver 1986 and 1991 state title coaching staffs.
