MONTROSE — Fruita Monument girls basketball captured the Southwestern League championship with a win over Montrose on Tuesday.
The Wildcats, ranked No. 8 in Class 5A, entered the game at 6-1 in league play, while 4A No. 10 Montrose was 5-1. Following a 55-32 win, Fruita has clinched the league title.
"Happy for the girls," Fruita coach Michael Wells said. "It's a culmination of lots of hard work and to end with a Southwest title makes the much sweeter."
Fruita Monument started fast on Tuesday, opening with a 9-0 run which led to an 18-9 advantage after the first quarter. The Wildcats extended their lead to 38-22 at halftime.
They continued to lead as it was 43-27 after three quarters.
With the win, Fruita Monument finishes the regular season at 21-2 overall.
"Give a lot of credit to Fruita tonight," Montrose coach Steve Skiff said. "They were able to come in and execute their gameplan and come away with a victory. We will learn from this and we will and we will go back to work tomorrow and prepare for our final league game Friday."
