Montrose boys soccer hosted 3A No. 4 Delta on Tuesday, and came away with a 5-2 win.
Tied at 2-2, Montrose scored three second half goals to secure the victory.
"I am really proud of the resilience that my team showed today," Montrose coach Cassie Snyder said. "We played hard the whole game and when we needed to capitalize on our opportunities the most, we came through at the end and put away three goals."
Each team scored two first half goals. Montrose's Bryan Delgado scored two, with one assisted by Jorge Baeza. Martin Corral scored both for Delta. Both were assisted by Nathan Downy.
The second half was up and down the field. With less than five minutes to play, Baeza put Montrose ahead 3-2. Then Sean Alex, on assists by Delgado ,scored two late goals to make the final 5-2.
"Early on I was down hanging my head," Baeza said. "Brian Delgado got me fired up and I scored the goal."
"We started the second half well and with a lot of momentum, because we knew we had control of the game," Alex said. "We struggled to finish all game, until Jorge stepped up to the plate and hit an absolute cracker to the top 90 and that sparked the team. We put two more goals in from great assists from Brian and Jorge and that sealed the deal."
Said Delta coach Paul Shean: "I thought Montrose wanted it more today. Give them credit for finishing the game. They blasted three quality shots past our keeper. The game was a battle but Montrose was the better team today.
"Montrose found a way to finish 80 minutes. When you stop playing after 75 minutes you open the door. They saw a little opening and kicked three balls in."
