No. 7 Hotchkiss baseball won two top-ten games on Friday


Hotchkiss baseball, ranked No.  7 in Class 2A, picked up wins over the No. 6 and No. 4 teams in 1A on Friday.

The Bulldogs beat No. 6 Dove Creek 14-5 in nine innings in a game that started at 10 a.m. in Dove Creek. Then, in a 3 p.m. game, they traveled to and beat No. 4 Nucla 15-3.

In the first game, Dove Creek tied the game at 5 in the bottom of the seventh inning. Two innings later, Hotchkiss scored nine runs in the top of the ninth for the win.

In the second game, Hotchkiss trailed 3-2 heading to the sixth — before exploding for six runs in the sixth, and seven more in the seventh.

Over the two games, Hotchkiss senior Presley Pene was 6-for-10 with five runs scored. He homered in the win over Dove Creek, and had five RBIs.

Pene also started the win over Nucla, and struck out 11 batters in five innings.

Brian Gonzalez had two RBIs in each game for the Bulldogs. He also pitched in the win over Dove Creek, and had nine strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings.

Hotchkiss is now 12-1 this season. They return to action with games against Paonia next Thursday and Friday.
