Fairview's Aidan Atkinson named Gatorade player of the year for football

Aidan Atkinson, who tore through the state records books this season, has been named the Gatorade player of the year for football in Colorado.

A junior at Fairview who also play basketball, Atkinson is the second football player from Fairview to win the award, following Scott Lockwood in 1986. He is the school's fifth athlete to win the Gatorade honor.

"Aidan was unstoppable this year," said Horizon coach Frank Ybarra. "He makes all the right reads, releases the ball extremely quickly and accurately and avoids mistakes.

Atkinson threw for a state record 55 touchdowns this season. He also set 11-man records for passing yards (687) and touchdowns (nine) this season.

After the season, he committed to Northwestern.

Atkinson has a 4.12 GPA. He volunteeresy with Fairview's Knights Crew, which helps acclimate freshmen to high school. He has also donated his time with Youths for Nurturing Minds, raising money for African girls to attend school in Tanzania. 

Atkinson now becomes a finalist for the national Gatorade Player of the Year award in football.
