Fourth-ranked Montrose beat Aurora Central 43-16 to finish the regular season 9-1.
Montrose started fast with two first quarter touchdowns, one on a pass from Emmert Kastendieck to Chris Eckerman and one by Chris Eckerman from one yard out.
In the second, Montrose scored again as Eckerman scored from one yard out. Osvaldo Portillo kicked a 28-yard field goal to make it 21-3. Then, Sam Hartman and Josh Kasamis scored to make it 35-3 in favor of Montrose at halftime.
Montrose's offense didn't cool off in the third quarter, when Elijah Evans added another score to make it 43-3.
Aurora Central's Tavonne Burden scored on a 60-yard run and it was 43-10 after three quarters.
The Trojans scored a late touchdown to make the final 43-16.
“We played well,” Coach Brett Mertens said. “I like the way we came out, other than the first-quarter turnovers which we need to clean up. I am happy for the seniors and we are ready for the playoffs.”
“We talked about the turnovers,” Emmert Kastendieck said. “We played well together. These guys have a lot of heart and I love playing with them. We stuck together.”
Montrose will now turn its attention to the postseason. The Class 4A brackets will release on Sunday.
