Aidan Atkinson has himself another record.
The star Fairview quarterback, only a junior, threw eight touchdown passes in Thursday's 56-14 win over Poudre. That gives him 53 this season, which sets the all-time record for a single season.
The previous mark was 52, set by Alamosa's Clay Garcia in 2006.
The eight touchdowns Atkinson threw for on Thursday night are tied for the fourth-most in a single game.
Atkinson broke the 11-man single-game passing record earlier this season. He also set the record for consecutive touchdown passes in three games with a combined 22 against Legacy, Horizon and Fossil Ridge.
Atkinson's 54 total touchdowns (he has a rushing score) are also the second-most in a single season, trailing only Only Woodlin's Harold Klausner (77 in 2005).
Atkinson is also on the verge of etching his name into the career record book less than two seasons into his varsity football career.
In 21 games of varsity competition, Atkinson has now thrown for 7,155 yards and 76 touchdowns. Both marks are just on the outside of the career record books: Arickaree's Dave Garcia is 11th with 7,471 career yards; Colorado Spring Christian's Justin Engesser is 15th with 78 career touchdowns.
Other records to watch with Atkinson:
- His 3,750 yards this season are already the seventh-most in a single season.
- He has 234 completions this season, which currently rank No. 8.
- His 374 pass attempts rank in a tie for the 11th-most.
Fairview (8-1) closes the regular season at home against Rocky Mountain next Friday.
