Volleyball roundup: Eaton beats Valley in battle of 3A's top two teams

Eaton isn't playing around when it comes to seeking a fifth consecutive Class 3A volleyball title.

So when the CHSAANow.com No. 1-ranked team in the state played host to No. 2 Valley, the Reds were all business. It showed with a 25-21, 25-13, 21-25, 25-22 win over the Vikings on Thursday night.

Even though the final score in sets was 3-1, Valley was anything but an easy team to beat. Sophomore Delaney Eckhardt put on a hitting show, finishing the match with 20 kills.

Senior Halie Diederich did her part as well with 34 assists. But it wasn't enough for the Vikings who fall to 1-1 on the regular season.

1A: (2) Fleming 3, (5) Weldon Valley 1

Fleming opened its season with a 25-23, 18-25, 25-14, 25-20 win over Weldon Valley in a battle of 1A top-five teams.

After the match was even through the first two sets, the Wildcats took over in the final two to get the victory.

5A/4A: (6) Cherry Creek 3, (5) Valor Christian 2

A five-set thriller highlighted Thursday's volleyball slate and it was 5A No. 6 Cherry Creek who got the 19-25, 25-21, 27-25, 25-23, 15-9 win over 4A No. 5 Valor Christian.

Junior Katie Sherman recorded 21 kills in the win. Ashley Hand helped out with 33 assists while Santana Monroe helped out defensively with five blocks.
