Ball Fever: Upsets rule boys basketball's week

(Ray Chen/ArrayPhoto.com)

This was a common sight last week: An elated team celebrating an upset win after the buzzer — as was the case with D'Evelyn taking down Valor Christian on Thursday. (Ray Chen/ArrayPhoto.com)

Last week was again full of surprises with new players and teams stepping up each night. There are two constants that stand as we enter February however: 5A No. 1 Regis Jesuit and 4A No. 1 Longmont remain our sole undefeated squads!

Let's review the action.

Week In Review

Monday, Jan. 26:

  • Quite an impressive performance by Eaglecrest as the Raptors invaded the Angels house and was up by 23 at halftime in this 5A top 10 matchup. Jack Buckmelter led the Angels with 16 points but it wasn't enough to slow Peter Anderson and Elijah Ross' "guard show"! Anderson ended the game with 25 (18 of that came from his hot left hand in first quarter) while Ross finished with 19 points, 3 assists. Brian Carey and Jordan Willis both had double-double stat nights of their own leading a second half charge for the Angels but the deficit was too much to overcome. Quite a road message sent by the Raptors!
  • Paul Ambuul's 23 points, 8 rebounds helped Air Academy win the overtime session 11-3 for the 8-point win over Falcon.
  • Dennis Pleuss was in the house as the young Lakewood Tigers upset No. 4, and previously undefeated, Dakota Ridge.
