5A football alignment proposals

A list of proposed 5A football conference alignments.

These are the final proposals that were submitted within the permitted time frame that will be considered by the football committee at their Dec. 5 meeting.

Enrollment numbers are listed next to each school.

Asterisk (*) indicates a school is playing up.

"Waterfall" explanation:

The system would be based on the last two years wild card points. Teams are placed within seven leagues.

• The 5A football committee would still seed teams for the playoffs.
• Teams that do not qualify for playoffs will play a Week 10 game as determined by the football seeding committee.
• A provision will be included that allows you to move teams up or down based on geography so we do not have teams with Grand Junction and Fruita Monument in their region for two cycles in a row. Fruita and GJ will never be placed in the same league. This movement is limited to two positions up or down, and is determined by CHSAA.
• Other CHSAA sanctioned sports, such as tennis, golf and wrestling, already use this system for playoffs to create a competitive balance.

The following is how leagues would look based on the last two years of wild card points while using the waterfall system. We added Monarch and Montbello based on equity, and as such, moved Rock Canyon to a different league and put Monarch in their place to create competitive balance based on the number of teams to qualify for the 5A playoffs this past season.

The numbers you see is the team's two-year wild card point average rank. Ties were broken based upon wild card point finish of the current season.
